As our community continues to mourn the loss of our friend, comrade, compatriot and neighbor RVFD Chief Kyle Ienn, I deem it appropriate to publish his professional bio. Kyle commissioned me to write it, along with a business résumé just recently.
Apparently he was full of optimism and hope at that time. We shall always wonder what happened to push him into his final decision.
And we shall always contemn and revile those who criticize his decision. It was his to make! Let's just honor him. His family has nothing of which to be ashamed!!! And his community will always love and honor him.
A funeral service has been scheculed for the Chief. The service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ralston High School.

BIO OF KYLE L. IENN, CHIEF, RALSTON VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

Kyle Ienn's roots run deep in his hometown of Ralston, Nebraska. A family man with three children himself, he is a graduate of Ralston High and grew up here. He believes in his community and, although he has a successful career in retail management, he has been active in community volunteerism since his boyhood, most notably in public safety and safety education, fire prevention and emergency response.

In over 22 years of public service in that capacity, Chief Ienn has assumed expanding roles of proactive leadership and authority with the RVFD, ascending from Volunteer to Treasurer, to Board Member, to Executive Board Member, to Assistant Chief. He was appointed Chief in 2001.

During that time the Chief has been instrumental in the growth of the department from 45 members with an annual call rate of 200, to its present level of 900 calls with about 52 volunteers.

Not only has he spearheaded vast improvements in the department's facilities, equipment and efficiencies, but he also has successfully envisioned and championed the recruitment of volunteers from neighboring communities and enhanced their training program to include leading edge methodologies and professional certification, but also assuming a leadership role in training other volunteer fire departments.

In that regard, RVFD is today in great demand to upgrade the professionalism of other departments, providing cross training for personnel as Certified Emergency Medical Technicians, empowering volunteers to provide timely response to crash and fire suppression calls, medical emergencies and traffic accidents. His mentoring has positively impacted the rescue of entrapped persons, utilizing forcible entry tools and power equipment in numerous communities.

His trainees are proficient in operating all hand and hose lines and raising and directing hose streams. as well as performing fire prevention, fire inspections, hydrant maintenance and station and apparatus maintenance. Not only has Kyle Ienn ushered in new levels of professionalism in the department's public service, but also he has successfully increased volunteer retention, morale and esprit d'corp. His many, many accomplishments include *

* Ascertained the need for and then organized the Nebraska Serious Injury & Line of Duty Death Response Team, bringing both career and volunteer responders to recognition by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). The 42-member team responds at a moment's notice when a firefighter dies in the line of duty. Appointed by NFFF as State Advocate for the Everyone Goes Home Program, traveling statewide on his own time, teaching classes to reduce firefighter fatalities.
* Organized the RVFD's Honor Guard and was appointed to the Board of Directors of The National Honor Guard Commanders' Association, responsible for two regions including 10 states. The formally uniformed Honor Guard participates in funerals and marches in public events.
* Serve on the Board of Directors of The National Council on Fireworks Safety, the only fire official on the board. Following an incident when a 13-year-old local boy was critically by illegal fireworks, the chief led a comprehensive public education campaign to make the Independence Day season safer for all who enjoy fireworks by heightening public awareness of responsible fireworks usage Continue to ariculate and advocate this message and materials with other departments to reduce injuries and property damage.
* Spearheaded Ralston’s first “Fireworks Amnesty Day” after finding that many residents did not have a way of safely disposing of leftover fireworks and explosives. In recognition of the event’s huge success, the City of Omaha, the ATF and Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office contacted the chief and requested to partner up with his program. As a result, three such locations were established in Ralston, Omaha and Council Bluffs.
* Chief Ienn was credited with saving the life of a longtime Ralston resident because of the Smoke / Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm program he founded. A CO alarm was installed for an 80-year-old resident, and with 24 hours of installation it alerted the lady. She called the chief in the middle of the night, not wishing to bother others. He immediately dispatched his crew who encountered dangerously high levels of CO in her home. As a direct result of Chief Ienn’s program, a life was thus saved.
* Recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), Volunteer and Combination Officers Section.

These are but a few examples of Kyle Ienn’s tireless leadership, vision and dedication to the safety of not only Ralston but also other communities and firefighters throughout the region and the nation. He is demonstrably capable of defining and setting long-term objectives, implementing sound management techniques, and initiating strategic planning. He has the consummate skill to effectively recruit, train, and motivate human resources, to delegate authority and to provide a viable liaison between diverse disciplines and professions, layers of government and between institutions, community organizations and the public.

His recognized contributions to public awareness and safety have been realized through initiative, take charge attitude, high energy level, insight, creativity, organization and executional follow through.

We were stunned to learn just minutes ago that Chief Kyle Ienn was found, hung to death under a bridge near 70th and Pine. He was a selfless civic leader, public safety educator/advocate and volunteer, a good friend and neighbor and a client. He always included The Shinbone Star when sending out news releases.

We just updated his résumé and his bio. We visited with his mother just last evening at the Village.

Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.

In a colossal abuse of power and trampling of the religious rights of Catholic Americans, Obama has now openly declared war on freedom of religion in America.

The federal government is now mandating, via its Socialist health care scheme, that private religious organizations must now provide employee health insurance plans that include coverage for contraception, abortion-inducing
drugs and sterilization.

This is in direct violation of church law and is as tyrannical and nonsensical as requiring rape victims to supply condoms to their attackers.

Just in time for "Black History Month".

The George Lucas film, "Red Tails", about the Tuskegee airmen, will be released in January. This might be a good time to revisit the facts as stated a few years ago.

From: Bob Powell This letter was not written for publication, but to enlighten you and you and your staff about some of the errors and misleading information you continue to publish, Perhaps it should be published to set your readers straight.

As a WWII Historian and former 8th AF fighter pilot flying 87 missions over Europe during WWII, I am dedicated to factual reporting about the air war in Europe and aviation in general, and I take issue with the media (and not with just AJC) continuing to publish untrue and/or misleading statements about the Tuskegee Airmen (T/A).

Although I have great respect for the pilots and achievements of this WWII Fighter Group, I do not appreciate the continuing repetition of myths and untruths about their military record, the latest example in the obit on Lt. Col Charles Dryden in today's paper, repeating the same errors which appeared in his obit story a few days ago.

For more than 60 years the myth that they "never lost a bomber they were escorting to an enemy fighter", was their primary claim to fame! Then, several months ago, their Historian, William E. Holten, announced that his research proved that this was not true, that they had, indeed, lost some 25 bombers to enemy fighters.

This myth still gets published occasionally, but far less frequently since he made this disclosure, thank goodness. Lies told often enough tend to become truths in the minds of many. However, it now seems to have been replaced by another false claim, i.e. that the Tuskegee Airmen flew more than 15,000 combat missions. ALSO NOT TRUE! Their own official records indicate that the T/A only flew 311 missions.

Their so-called 15,000 "missions" were actually 15,000 "sorties.". Apparently, none of your reporters know the difference between a "mission" and a "sortie," so let me define these for you and them. Combat Mission is an assigned flight to accomplish a military objective. This can be flown by one pilot or a squadron or group of pilots flying together. It is recorded as one mission.

Combat Sortie. When, for example, 48 or 64 pilots fly together on a combat mission it is recorded as 48 or 64 combat sorties. The T/A did not fly 15,000+ combat missions - as stated in your articles about the demise of Col. Charles Dryden. They flew 15,000+ "sorties". To have flown that many "missions" during the time they were in combat in the MTO, they would have had to fly about 25 missions a day everyday they were in combat. Do the math. That's one mission every hour, everyday they were in combat. Impossible! Weather alone would have prevented this, not to mention the problem of keeping all of their aircraft flyable everyday over that period of time.

FACT: Their official records indicate they flew only 311 missions, a far cry from 15,000 claimed. Please advise your reporters of the difference between a mission and a sortie so that another T/A myth is not appearing in every mention this Fighter group.

The Dryden story also stated that the 99th Squadron of the T/A was "the most successful squadron in American history." NOT SO! It would be more correct to say they have been the most publicized squadron in American history, however, thanks to a fully-paid public relations staff in Washington, D.C., the only such office of any military unit other than the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.

Although I do not have complete combat statistics on all the fighter groups flying out of Africa and Italy (the MTO), I do have the stats on all of the 16 fighter groups flying in the Eighth Air Force over western Europe. And, when these records are compared, the Tuskegee Airmen rank at the bottom of the list despite the fact that they had four squadrons to only three for the 8th AF groups. FYI, and one of the reasons the T/A exploit their 15,000+ sorties (which they call missions) is that on a normal mission they would put up 64 fighters compared to only 48 for the 8th AF groups.

And, since they did mostly ground support missions rather than bomber escort missions, the average length of their missions was about half that of the time in the air flown by the 8th AF fighters.

Re the above mentioned stats, I would be delighted to provide these for your information if requested. Another gross error in your first story on Colonel Dryden is that the implication that he was, individually, awarded the Congressional Gold Medal recently. ALSO NOT TRUE.

Through the efforts of the New York Senator, this medal was awarded to the Tuskegee Airmen, authorizing all Tuskegee Airman to receive this award. It was not awarded for individual achievements, as implied, but for the role played by the T/A in breaking the color ban for pilots, a civil rights accomplishment, not for their military achievements. Had this award been given for their military achievements alone, it should also have been awarded to each and every other fighter group in WWII whose records exceeded those of the Tuskegee Airmen.

In my opinion, this was a "political award" instead of a military award. No other bomber or fighter units have been awarded this Medal, only Unit Citations.

New twist on Birth Certificate issue. It was brought to light that back in 1961 people of color were called 'Negroes.'

So how can this 'birth certificate' state he is 'African-American' when the term wasn't even used back then??

This isn't over! This is interesting! Here is a comment from a reader to George Ure at Urban Survival.com <http://urbansurvival.com/&gt :

"As you all know, Donald Trump made a big deal about Obama's birth certificate. I will tell you right now that I had never given this "birther" issue any credit. I watched the hype and the crazies come out. I completely dismissed the entire ordeal altogether.
In fact, it was not until the White House released the birth certificate that it had gained my attention. I am the studious sort of guy, and I have plenty of time on my hands. So, I took a close look at this document. While I would have thought that this issue would have been closed for good (and, got the crazies to crawl back into their holes), I found two extremely strange inconsistencies that merit some attention.
First of all, the birth certificate that the White House released lists Obama's birth as August 4, 1961. It also lists Barack Hussein Obama as his father. No big deal, right? This cannot be, because the hospital(s) in question in 1961 were called "Kaui Keolani Children's Hospital" and "Kapi'olani Maternity Home," respectively. The name did not change to Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital until 1978, when these two hospitals merged.
How can this particular name of the hospital be on a birth certificate dated 1961 if this name had not yet been applied to it until 1978? Go ahead, look it up. I am not talking crazy talk....these are the facts.
Like I said, I thought that this was a non-issue until the actual certificate was released. Now that it has been released, of course I had to look into it. I have found these issues, now I know that something is up. In a no-surprise front page PUFF PIECE in this week's Ralston Rag, editor "Colonel" Klink -- himself a mere lackey of the Rag's owner THE OMAHA WEIRD HAROLD -- announced that all three village council incumbent members up for election intend to run for re-election. Duh! What a surprise, NOT!

The entire council consists of nonentities who are nothing more than rubber stamps and sycophants of Ralston's five-term Mayor Don "The Don" Grossest. As long as the somnolent voting sheeple of Ralston vote for these guys, real progress won't occur. Remember the last council election? One council candidate spoke to this writer and promised to send me a position paper, delineating what he thought were the issues in the election. Of course, the gasbag didn't keep his promise!

Then I threw out the challenge to the candidates to tell us, the voting public, what differentiates them from one another and/or from El Grossissimo.

Their silence was deafening! Ya see, the way things are spozed to work here in our sleepy little hamlet is that the town is run by the good ole boy (and girl) network, run by the Chamber Pot of Commerce, which enjoys its incestuous relationship with our politicians by poetically officing in the former town jail at the Town Hall.
It's just like when we were all in high school. The popular kids, usually the jocks and the cheerleaders and their clique, run for office. And it's nothing more than a popularity contest.
Each candidate issues a bio and some literature bragging about his/her memberships and family.
Each picks a no-brainer of a non-issue to support: this year's issue du jour is the new arena.
No one will dare to question the heavy-handed way that the public was LIED to, at least deceived, about a yes/no referendum.
No one will mention how the Ralston American Legion was bullied and bulldozed and almost evicted and then, robbed of most of its parking and safe ingress/egress/
No one will dare ask QUI BONO? -- Who is lining his/her pockets from this deal? Why is Hizzonner shelling out megabucks to his crony outside "consultants" to explore no-brainers such as the impact on traffic?
Do like me: get someone, someone not in bed with the PTB, to run for council. Or run yourself. Or just write in the name of someone you trust!

And it is a good law! Any parent who would disfigure or mutilate a child is guilty of child abuse, period. That even applies to piercings. I see infants every day with pierced ears. That is obscene! Likewise, painful and permanent tattoos, ornamental scarring. Even circumcision, which is a painful sexual mutilation!

Until a person is old enough to vote and volunteer for military service, that person shouldn't be able to make such a self-disfiguring decision, nor should his guardians!

Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul has promised to do everything within his power to ensure the draconian Protect IP Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) are not brought to a vote.

Paul says he will filibuster PIPA in the Senate owing to the fact that the bill is a direct threat to the First Amendment.

“Both PIPA and SOPA give the federal government unprecedented and unconstitutional power to censor the Internet,” Paul said in astatement. “These bills enable the government to shut down websites that it deems guilty of violating copyright laws.”

Paul continued: “While we support copyright protections, we are also concerned about websites being shut down without their day in court, and making innocent third parties bear the costs of solving someone else’s problems.

“I will not sit idly by while PIPA and SOPA eliminate the constitutionally protected rights to due process and free speech. For these reasons, I have pledged to oppose, filibuster and do everything in my power to stop government censorship of the Internet,” Paul said.

As we have documented, SOPA and PIPA are bills essentially written by powerful lobbyists for the entertainment industry. They do not effectively stop real piracy, rather they target websites, giving the government the power to seize any site of its choosing and take it offline should the site be arbitrarily deemed to be infringing copyright. Without due process!

What actually constitutes infringement of copyright according the the legislation, however, is so broad that a site could be targeted merely for displaying a hyper link. CLICK HERE

In an effort to put a positive spin on the disastrous parking paucity at the Ralston American Legion, because of our Lord High Mayor's bulldozers and new ice rink, Post Commander "Clueless" Kelly willingly allowed himself to be quoted sounding optimistic about the lack of parking that will exist, even after "they" add a few more parking spaces, but still hardly enough to accommodate large functions at the post!

(See that barricade? That is where you have to execute a 90-degree right and then a 90-degree left to get into the lot!!!)
Not mentioned in the puff piece is the fact that emergency vehicles CANNOT get in to our property, because of the double 90-degree double L zigzag in the entranceway.
Only the SHINBONE STAR has discussed this. The silence of Editor Colonel Klink and Clueless Commander Kelly is deafening!
Redirecting our members to park across the street and wait for a shuttle bus to shuttle them over to the post is totally BUGHOUSE, unworkable and intolerable. And who is going to pay for the bus service: we can't. I don't hear The Don offering to help!
I spoke this morning over breakfast with a Ralston real estate expert who said that not all of our former parking lot was in our property.
When I pointed out the legal Common Law concept of "adverse possession," he knew I was right: the property could be ours, if we asserted our claim to it!!!! I'm a paralegal; I used to manage a law office. We have used that adjoining land long enough with no objection from the village fathers!

Winter is on its way -- with a vengeance!!!

Why in the heck do the Whooping Cranes and geese need a small plane to show them how to migrate? Isn't that just instinctual???

EDITOR REPLIES: No, unfortunately.

Geese and cranes and numerous other waterfowl are hatched with the genetic instinct to fly with the changing of the seasons. BUT they only fly in circles.
They have to LEARN from their parents which way is south and where the good wintering grounds are located.
This is explained in the movie Fly Away Home.
And this explains why Ralston's flock of Canadian Geese spend their winters here. Now that His Lordship The Don, our mayor, has plowed-under their favorite pond, to be replaced by that cockamamie (IMHO) arena, our geese have found other ponds nearby. Boystown being one of them!
But at some point their ancestors were orphaned and never taught where to go! Otherwise they'd be somewhere south in a warmer clime right now.
If Ralston's "town fathers" gave a rat's behind about wildlife and conservation, they would find someone with a small plane outfitted to look like a bird, to escort them south for the winter.

We covered this story "back when," you'll remember. Thugs order a couple of pizzas and ask the guy to bring change for a $100 dollar bill. THAT should've been a dead giveaway, but the pizza company fell for it. The victim was a diminuative little computer pro who chose to deliver pizzas instead, or, more likely, he just couldn't find computer work.

In my previous coverage of this case, I pointed out, correctly, that police work is FAR from the most dangerous profession. Cops carry guns, radios, mace, nightsticks, etc., and have armed backup.
No, according to national crime statistics, the two most dangerous professions are pizza delivery and taxi driver. Those guys are robbed, beaten and killed most often of all.
I am sensitive to this because back in the sixties, even though I had a full-time job as a computer operator, I delivered pizzas and fried chicken for Pizza Delight/Chicken Delight in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.
Twice I was accosted by gangs of "wonderful equal" black "disadvantaged" African gangbangers. Twice they pulled knives on me and threatened to use them. Twice I was able to bluff myself out of it.
Finally, even my own little pea brain realized that mine was a dangerous sideline. I should've quit!
Instead I started packing heat. I carried a concealed .32 semi-automatic on my person. Thank the gods, I never had to use it!!!!

It was the equivalent of a Chinese Fire Drill last night, as the Ralston American Legion held its first taco night since the Lord High Mayor closed us down for almost two months and reconstructed our driveway and cut away most of our parking spaces. Now we have a very tight, double 90 degree turn into what few parking spaces are left.

The Powers That Be (PTB) provided lots of parking for the new arena, but only a couple of dozen spaces were left for US!!!

There is no way an emergency vehicle can negotiate its way to our door. One of these days a member or guest is going to need the Rescue Squad, or, worse, we will have a fire. Then the lawsuits will start blazing and fingers will start pointing.

Your editor was there and heard exasperated folks complaining about the lack of parking. Folks had to park horizontally along the drive, and that space was limited too. Most of these folks don't read the Shinbone Star, or they would have been forewarned. Those who do read the Shinbone just nodded and winked at me!
I heard one lady say that she was going to call the mayor. Good. I hope his Lordship's phone starts ringing off the hook.
I also hope that whoever is in charge of Public Safety calls The Don and his rubber stamp council and raises holy heck.
There must be a law against not following public safety code, so someone should be fined.
The ground adjacent to our parking lot is all plowed up and will turn into muck with the next rainfall or snowmelt. Even if we put down some gravel for parking, it will squish down into the mire and muck, and folks will get stuck.
The question remains unanswered, Mr. Post Commander and Mr. Lord High Mayor -- what were you thinking when you blocked access to emergency vehicles?!?!?!
Why didn't you ask your multimegabucks hifalutin' traffic consultant, hmmmm?

Totally ignored and unenforced speed limit sign at Hillcrest on Main Street

An article in this morning's Weird Harold by Ralston Rag editor Colonel Adam Klink unveils the latest scheme by Ralston's village fathers to spend more of your tax money. As usual, our fearless leaders are hiring an expensive outside "consultant" to "analyze" what traffic problems will result from the opening of the Mayor's new arena now under construction next to, and crowding, our American Legion Post at the former golf course on Q Street.

It's been two years since this writer first pointed out what even then was obvious ~~

More traffic on 72nd and 84th Streets will spill over into our residential neighborhoods and our old business district on the winding, serpentine confluence of streets informally named "Independence Avenue."
There is almost ZERO traffic enforcement now. The 20 mph speed limit downtown is ignored, even by the cops. So are the 4-way stop signs. Just stand at one of them and count how many people just roll on through.
Drivers and pedestrians are endangered as it is.
The blind spot at Hillcrest at 76th and Main is the most dangerous place to be driving or walking. The speed limit is 20, but most people are doing 25 or 30 or more so. Just last year a small child -- whose parents were irresponsibly drinking at Scorz Howling Alley instead of doing their parenting at home -- was almost hit by a speeder.
No one was hurt; no one was ticketed. Both the driver and the parents should have had to appear before a judge.
It doesn't take a college degree or a big time consultant to realize that the Ralston Barney Fifes are going to have to start enforcing the law!!! And we will probably need more cops on the payroll. We've been calling ourselves a "city" for a long time -- it's about time we started ACTING like a city~~!!

Edgar faster than the Democrats could force the nosedive of Herman Cain in the polls, much comes to mind about the distorted, historical portrait of the 48-year reign of America’s top G-man.

While no one dared discuss it while he was alive, Hoover was a bad example of a lawman. A closet homosexual (although claims he was a transvestite are probably untrue), he authorized illegal wiretapping and surveillance bugs on innocent people, as well as suspects, and maintained continuing dossiers on everybody who was anybody—all of which made him the 20th century’s poster boy for rampant abuse of power. His underhanded tactics of officially documenting what he knew to be lies about prominent people—followed by threats of publication if they didn’t back away from the current issue at hand—became well known throughout the political circles of Washington. Thanks to our Lord High Mayor The Don, El Grossissimo and all of his puppets, sycophants and yes-men on the town council, and thanks to the ill-informed, misguided and gullible SHEEPLE who voted to support him,
Omaha is certain to annex us! And our village fathers had the AUDACITY to call Ralston "Independence City." It is neither independent nor a city, thanks to our loser leaders!
The subject of annexation has come up already before the Omaha council. And this morning for a second time, a letter to the editor in the OWH Pubic Pulse is railing to gobble us up, just like Hitler did to Austria and Poland, et al!!!

On Omaha and Ralston

I believe the time has come for Omaha to annex Ralston. Ralston has decided to take the last tenants of the Omaha Civic Auditorium and build a new arena with those rents.

It is a slap at the long-standing agreement not to annex Ralston. But Ralston breached the agreement by taking the tenants from the Omaha Civic Auditorium.

It is time to collect the costs of living in the metropolitan Omaha area without paying Omaha for the benefits of the arena and other loopholes that defy basic principles of good government.

If you are 36, or older, you might think this is hilarious!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning....Uphill.... Barefoot... BOTH ways...yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of forty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

1) I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

2) There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

3) Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! Nowhere was safe!

4) There were no MP3's or Napsters or iTunes! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!

5) Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig?

6) We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it!

7) There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends". OH MY GOSH !!! Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7!!! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are.

8) And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

9) We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your screen guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen.. Forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

10) You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!!! NO REMOTES!!! Oh, no, what's the world coming to?!?!

11) There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!

12) And we didn't have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove! Imagine that!

13) And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores!

And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were lucky, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place!

See! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled rotten! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1970 or any time before!

EDITOR'S REPLY -- Lumpy, you kids had it easy! Think about how it was for me in 1950. We had the only TV in town, hence a lot of company every night!, and only 3 stations.
Music was purchased on 78s. We stiill had an icebox (that's a fridge that is cooled by blocks of ice!), a wringer washer, coal stove heat and an outhouse.
We got our water from a hand pump and a well. But we had a milkman and a bread man who delivered once a week (the iceman delivered twice a week!).
We had a garden and grew our own veggies, and we had a strawberry patch and bushes with blackberries, raspberries and currants. And we had fruit trees as well. And nut trees. Mommy and Dad got much of our meat with their rifles, and Mommy had a slingshot too, for the rabbits! Sometimes we went fishing out at Dead Man's Lake.
But for Sunday dinner, my Granny would buy us a live chicken for 50 cents. She would chop its head off with an ax, and we'd watch it run around headless until it finally croaked. Then she'd pluck out the feathers and singe off the stubble. -- Smelled awful. But after she gutted it and dressed it and threw it in the skillet, it smelled like heaven.
All of that was served with fresh garden veggies and homemade pies and cakes -- nothing out of the box.
Back in the good old days, we ate inside the house and pooped out back. Nowadays it is fashionable to cook and eat outdoors and do the rest inside. I don't call that progress!!!
Games? We had outdoor games of course. Indoors we had parchesi, checkers, dominoes, caroms, chess, other board games and cards.
We telecommunicated via a party line phone system with hand crank ringers and a central operator, Margie, to connect you. She also would tell you all of the latest news and gossip, because she listened in to everyone's conversations.
If you got paddled at school, your mom knew about it before you got home, and she whomped you too. Then when Dad came home, he got his turn. And, yes, the neighbors were allowed to paddle us too.
We took our baths in a steel tub in the kitchen, heated with water cooked on the stove. Being the oldest, I got first dibs on the bathwater. My lil bro and sis had to use what was left over!
BUT when we got to junior high, we had PE and real SHOWERS. And back then there was no such thing as homophobia, so we all showered together NAKED!!! And no one turned queer!!! Later in the Boy Scouts and the YMCA we skinnydipped too! So there!
That was back in the good old days when the air was clean and sex was dirty. -- when the men were men and the women were DAMN GLAD of it! And no one needed to obsess about his "sexual identity or preference."
We didn't have locks on our doors either. No need!
And we thought we were RICH!
Ya know what? - - - We WERE!!!!

It's mostly SS/DD, but overall the whole subject is illustrative of the futility and the hypocrisy of the Lifestyle Control laws in our country. Imbibing adult beverages (for adults) has been legal since the failure of Prohibition and its repeal. But a few facts must be pointed out.

As the late and beloved Nino D'Agosta, proprietor of Nino's Place bar on 60th, often pointed out, folks who drink daily at a bar are usually the safest and best drivers, because they are so careful.
They know their limitations. They take no chances!
And even when they are not "under the influence," imbibers tend to be better drivers. Notice those idjits you see every day in traffic.
Speeding. Jackrabbit starts and stops. Cellphoning. Texting. Tailgating. Eating. Yelling at the kids in the back seat. Shaving or applying makeup. Taking wide turns across lanes. Accelerating through yellow lights and red lights. *** 99% of those idjits are stone cold sober.
And, have you ever noticed that when you do correctly signal before changing lanes or turning, some A-hole will speed up to cut you off?!?!?!
Naturally when you add alcohol or pharmaceuticals or distracted driving to careless driving or, worse, reckless driving, you have a recipe for catastrophe.
Let's enforce THOSE LAWS!!
The new ignition interlock devices are good, in that they mean that an "offender" can still drive to work and shop. Only two cities in the state have bus service, and even that is limited to certain areas and hours.
Such devices are far from perfect, however. They will indicate that you have been drinking if you have used Scope or Listerine or if you had some fruit juice that had aged enough to start to ferment. Or if you have taken Nyquil or some similar cold medicine. And almost all fruit juice contains some alcohol!
And, since they measure your breath, they are activated by alcohol in your saliva, whether it has reached your liver and blood system yet or not!
Moreover, you can still drive a different car.
And the problem of drugs and drinking is still completely ignored. The combination of marijuana, say, and alcohol will always enhance the effect.
Historically, like Prohibition, all efforts to legislate human nature will fail. No one should be penalized for what he MIGHT do. Merely being .008 doesn't constitute a real crime; there is no victim. Driving carelessly or recklessly DOES constitute a crime -- there is a clear and certain danger.

Ralston American Legion Post Commander Kelly and his ossifers are CLUELESS when it comes to business acumen. I've been down to the the post HQ now twice this week, and the place is nearly empty.

Why? -- Because the rank and file haven't been officially notified that the post has re-opened.

This is the same Post Commander, I must remind you, who proclaimed that being shut down for two months (by Hizzzzzzzoner El Alcalde Donaldo Grossissimo) would be good for us, because that would cut down on expenses.

**Have you ever heard of IMPEACHMENT, Commander? Show me the books right now -- how much money has the post gone into the hole because of those two lost months???

I ran into a post comrade today who gave me an interesting heads up --
Because of the "S" curve configuration [ I correct myself -- that is a 90 degree curve! ] that Donald Grossest has put into our new ingress (entryway) into our parking lot, it is IMPOSSIBLE for a firetruck to manoeuvre into our parking lot, especially when the lot is full, due to its diminished size --
HOW THE HECKFIRE can the Ralston Volunteer Fire Squad or its Rescue Vehicle get there in the event of an emergency? HMMM???
Emergencies have occurred before, and one will again, sooner or later!
Please, Commander Kelly and Mayor Grossest, 'SPLAIN this to our readers and to our membership!!!!

WHERE DID OUR PARKING SPACES GO???

Your editor got wind of the Ralston Legion's re-opening through the grapevine. Post 373 didn't even have the cash to send us a newsletter. This is the same Legion post that took a powder when it should have gotten an injunction when Hizzoner our High Mayor Donald Gross -- El Grossissimo -- threatened to confiscate our property and move us out! And our then Commander was only too willing to let that happen so that Don the Grossest could get that new hockey rink he has been salivating over!

Thanks to the outrage generated by the rank and file membership and the publicity from THE SHINBONE STAR, Hizzoner the Don backed off his original intention to boot us out of our property, with our "leadership's" compliant appeasement, not unlike when Neville Chamberlain kissed Hitler's backside~!
Most recently, as reported herein, the current groveling Commander and his wussy cadre have fully complied with El Grossissimo in closing us down for two months WITHOUT COMPENSATION while the "city" tore up the street and our parking lot.
Now we are stuck with hardly any parking spaces left, and our "leadership" wants to sit down with the Mayor and his myrmidons and do some more ass-kissing and basically sell out the membership. Again!!
The employees at Post 373 and the membership want to know: when is the Gross One going to reimburse us our lost wages and dues and revenues for this latest intrusion?!?!?!?
When are we Legionaires going to elect an entirely new leadership cadre with some testicular fortitude to stand up to our mad Mayor's empire-building designs.
This is a wealthy politician who has never worn the uniform, who couldn't care less about the Legion, except when we provide an Honor Guard for his public ceremonies and funerals.
It's time to impeach some limp wienies and sell-out politicians.

We've been reading a lot lately about educational standards in the schools and about the pros and cons of "social promotions," meaning giving a student a passing grade even when he can't pass the tests, so he can "progress" along with his peers.

The above picture was taken by a Shinbone reader who wants to remain anonymous. It is at a Ralston Middle School.
If teachers and educational administrators use bad grammar, how in the *&&^$# are our kids supposed to learn anything?

The placement of a comma can alter the meaning of a whole sentence -- I learned that in THIRD GRADE from Miss Orwig in P.C. Grade School!!!
I would prefer that what the supposed college graduated " edumacators" of Ralston children were trying to say with this inapt sign was this --
NO, KIDS COUNT.
Otherwise they are saying, KIDS DON'T COUNT.
Which is not a very good thing for kids' professional educators to proclaim, don't you think????
I'd like to hear something back from the Principal of this so called school or from someone on the Ralston school board about this perfect example of why our kids aren't learning!!!!
Seriously, "teach" -- explain this for the readers of Shinbone Star, I dare you!
Next time, folks, when they ask you to vote for another school bond increase, VOTE NO!

**Postscript: An excellent example of the importance of comma placement is set forth in the recent best seller: EATS, SHOOTS AND LEAVES. It is a handy handbook on punctuation in general, but its title says it all.

With the comma after the word EATS, all four words (minus the conjunction AND) are verbs, and would seem to describe how a wild west gunslinger or a mafioso or a gangbanger often spends his time.
WITHOUT the comma SHOOTS and LEAVES become nouns, and the phrase then describes the dietary regimen of the Panda.

I watched "Home Alone" again last night, as I often do this time of year, and the movie evoked poignant feelings and nostalgia for xmases past. I cherish the memories of Yule trees and stockings and presents and family gatherings and feasts. Sure I do! But my family is mostly gone, and the remaining few of us are scattered. As author Thomas Wolfe said, "You can't go home."

I feel somewhat vindicated for my malaise, now that I read in the papers that I am part of a vast growing minority who have become fed up with what even the pope now calls the "faux Christmas."

And, although I am myself a Scrooge and a Bah Humbug original, this time of year brings back many fond memories of growing up in a small town of 613 souls on the prairies of Illinois. My family was rich -- rich with the long-established lore of love, literature, literacy and pride in ourselves -- things which most people did not possess or know then, much less now. And wonderful xmases with presents and turkey and dressing and all the fixin's and pies and cakes and all the magical creations of the culinary arts.

It was only when I was in high school and I started dating that it came to me that other folks, even though we looked down on most of them and their ignorant, insular, parochial, churlish ways, had more affluence than we did, my mommy and dad and bro and sis and granny and all of the doting uncles and aunts and our Meme and our two Boppies. And our dogs and cats and critters. But we had all we wanted or needed.

For those of you who have never read it, the following little literary piece was composed by me not long after I migrated to Nebraska. I was living down in Albright in Soud O, before it turned into little Mexico and gangland.
I had gotten to know many of the locals at the Triangle Bar and was accepted, even with my Illinois ways.
"Da Sarge" and I had become pals.
This is pretty much a true story, although I have changed some of the names.
It was my starting chapter of a novel which I have yet to complete. I hope y'all enjoy it and can appreciate the imagery and the visual POV (Point of View) it conveys ---

Ronette Ricketts attacked fellow teacher Cynthia Glozier with

a screw driver, stabbing her multiple times at the school.

Ricketts is Black and her victim White (no surprise here), and if

not for the actions of one

civilized Black student in the school,

Glozier would likely not be around to celebrate the

New Year.

It is interesting that this latest attack wave based upon these twenty-year old statements surfaced only after the Weekly Standard wrote about them in their latest issue. The Weekly Standard is Irving Kristol's premier neo-con, pro-war publication in the US--the epitome of the establishment desire to defeat the only anti-war candidate in the Republican stable.

The Weekly Standard also figured prominently in attacking Pat Buchanan when he upset the establishment election plans. Here's Timothy P. Carney, Senior Political Columnist for the Washington Examiner predicting that the establishment will take the gloves off in attacking Ron Paul:

"The Republican presidential primary has become a bit feisty, but it will get downright ugly if Ron Paul wins the Iowa caucuses. The principled, antiwar, Constitution-obeying, Fed-hating, libertarian Republican congressman from Texas stands firmly outside the bounds of permissible dissent as drawn by either the Republican establishment or the mainstream media..

"But in a crowded GOP field currently led by a collapsing Newt Gingrich and an uninspiring Mitt Romney, Paul could carry the Iowa caucuses, where supporter enthusiasm has so much value. If Paul wins, how will the media and the GOP react? Much of the media will ignore him (expect headlines like 'Romney Beats out Gingrich for Second Place in Iowa'). Some in the Republican establishment and the conservative media will panic. Others will calmly move to crush him, with the full cooperation of the liberal mainstream media.

Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805)

Smith was the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In 1827, he claimed that an angel directed him to buried golden plates containing God's revelation, which he translated as the Book of Mormon. He led converts to Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois, and reintroduced the Old Testament practice of polygamy, as established by the patriarchs and prophets of old.

When in 1844 he announced his candidacy for the presidency of the US, he and his brother were thrown in jail in Nauvoo, Illinois, where they were murdered and martyred by a lynch mob.
The Republican Party was founded in the late 1854 and offered the twin planks of abolishing the "evils" of polygamy and slavery. It didn't become Conservative until the mid 19th century, when the party lines were redrawn over the issue of segregation. This is another astonishing story about another pandering, slimy politician, except this time his actions could justly be labeled treasonous rather than just absurd.

Democratic New Haven, Ct. Mayor John Destefano has openly called for giving illegal aliens the right to vote in local elections. He has, in fact, vowed to seek legislation that would allow this nonsense.

The Democratic Governor of Ct. Dan Malloy refused to denounce this unconstitutional proposal and, like the sniveling coward that he is, would only say that he was looking at all sides of the issue. You might remember that Destefano is the retard who gave firefighter jobs to Blacks with lower test scores than white applicants. The Supreme Court ruled against the mayor in a precedent-setting case that slowed the tide of reverse discrimination against better qualified Whites. We have known for ages that liberal politicians will do about anything to kiss minority ass and, in this case, prove to have a deep hatred of their own people. My amazement concerns the people of New Haven and Ct. who seem to be in a collective coma. Why is this man still in office (since 1994), serving his NINTH term?

What is wrong with the people of Ct. and is there any way to make them secede from the Union and disassociate themselves from the rest of us?

As was predicted on Alex Jones' website, now that the GOP's Representative Ron Paul of Texas is taking the lead in the Iowa polls, the pinko Left captive media is taking off its kid gloves and accusing the good doctor of being a racist and using inflammatory rhetoric.
This editor has been accused of the same more than once, and unlike Ron, I don't deny preferring my own kind: I don't hate 'em, but sure don't date 'em.
I also prefer redheads to brunettes and labradors to poodles. If you think that is hate, I have some oceanfront property in Ralston I'd like to sell you!!!
And,as Ron has pointed out, our wonderful "equals" certainly have the highest violent crime rate: the highest black-on-black violence and the highest interracial violence rate. That's according to the FBI!
Perhaps the Libs should be reminded of the "politically incorrect" remarks of 3rd party candidate Abe Linkhorn in 1858. You might have heard of ole "honest Abe."

South Carolina Becomes the First State to Secede from the US (1860)

In the 1830s, South Carolina residents, frustrated by agricultural tariffs, first broached the possibility of secession. Several New England states had threatened to secede before SC. Tariff reform appeased Carolina for some time, but following the election of President Abraham Linkhorn and his Radical Republican Party (a 3rd party until then) in 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union. The newly independent state's governor immediately seized all Union property within the state, including Fort Sumter.

The firing on Sumter by Confederate batteries in 1861 provided the excuse the North wanted for the invasion of Secessia by the Yankee Armies of Abraham Linkorn.

We are still suffering the outcomes of that tragic conflict. On this the anniversary of secession, our Second American Revolution, it behooves us to learn more about why the South was compelled to divorce its sister states. More Americans died in that bloody, fratricidal conflict than in any other American war.

Paraprosdokians

A paraprosdokian is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part. It is frequently used for humorous or dramatic effect, sometimes producing ananticlimax.

1. Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

3. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on the list.
